Biography
Mete Turksoy
Human Rights Advocate & Researcher
Mete Turksoy’s work integrates academic theory with empirical application in the fields of human rights, civic mobilization, democratization, and global governance. With practical experience operating within geopolitically sensitive and politically restrictive environments, Turksoy’s primary focus encompasses civic education, alternative media management, and international legal advocacy.
Academic Background
Turksoy holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Khazar University in Azerbaijan and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in the "Politics and Governance of Global Challenges" program at the University of Bergen in Norway. This ongoing academic specialization is supported through the institutional framework of the Students at Risk (StAR) program.
Civic Mobilization and Political Participation
Turksoy possesses substantial empirical experience in coordinating large-scale civic initiatives and managing political campaigns. Key engagements include:
Electoral Participation: Acted as an opposition candidate in the 2020 parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, utilizing the platform to document electoral irregularities and advance civil rights discourse.
Mass Assemblies:Coordinated significant public demonstrations, including assemblies in 2019 and 2021 concerning the status of political prisoners, and a major 2022 rally in Baku in support of Ukraine, which mobilized approximately 10,000 participants.
Alternative Media and Civic Education
To counter institutional monopolies on information, Turksoy has directed strategic initiatives in media and alternative education aimed at shaping youth political consciousness:
Political Management Institute (2022–2023): Served as Manager and Coordinator, developing civic education programs focused on democratic governance, gender equality, and human rights outside official state curricula.
NIDA Civic Movement: Functioned as Project Coordinator, organizing structured human rights discussions and utilizing alternative mediums for youth engagement.
RLC Broadcast Channel: Coordinated independent online broadcasting operations to provide alternative political narratives and objective analysis.
International Legal Advocacy
In response to systemic political pressure—including formal arrests in 2019 and 2024, alongside an extrajudicial relocation in 2021—Turksoy has escalated civil rights defense to international institutional levels.
European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR):Successfully secured a favorable ruling against state authorities regarding an arbitrary detention that occurred in 2019. Formal complaints concerning the 2021 extrajudicial relocation and the 2024 arrest are currently under active judicial investigation by the Court.
Current Research Focus
Turksoy's current research agenda analyzes contemporary geopolitical shifts and structural vulnerabilities in global governance. Primary areas of investigation include the technological and political fragmentation between Europe and the United States in the era of artificial intelligence, the systemic implications of China's rise, global democratic backsliding, societal polarization, and the structural complexities of international migration. Furthermore, this research critically examines epistemic ignorance and epistocratic challenges within Western and global governance frameworks, alongside structural analyses of secularization paradigms versus dogmatic fanaticism.
